Choosing an exoskeleton used to be mainly about how much assistance it could provide. In 2026, there is another question to consider: where do you want that assistance?

Some consumer exoskeletons provide power around the hips, helping with the repeated hip movement involved in walking, climbing, and running. Other designs extend powered assistance to the knees. Full-leg systems bring the two together, coordinating assistance across both joints.

Full-leg systems bring the two together, coordinating assistance across both joints.

That difference is important because your hips and knees have very different roles when you move. It also changes what you wear, where the motors sit, and the type of support the system can provide.

Within our own lineup, this separates the New Hypershell X Series from Hypershell Halo. The X Series uses two motors at the hips, while Halo uses four motors across the hips and knees.

So, what does each type of exoskeleton offer?

Hip, Knee, and Full-Leg Exoskeletons Compared

Feature Hip Exoskeleton Knee Exoskeleton Full-Leg Exoskeleton
Powered joints Hips Knees Hips and knees
Where assistance is focused Movement of the leg from the hip Knee flexion and extension Movement across both joints
Walking Assists repeated hip movement through the stride Assists movement around the knee Coordinates assistance across the leg
Uphill movement Supports the hip as the leg moves forward and upward Supports movement at the knee as the body rises Provides powered assistance at the hips and knees
Downhill movement Can provide powered support during downhill movement, depending on the system Can assist the knee during repeated bending and extension Coordinates hip and knee assistance throughout the descent
System coverage Hip-focused Knee-focused Full-leg

The main difference comes down to where the assistance is provided and how much of the lower body the system supports.

What Does a Hip Exoskeleton Actually Do?

Your hips are involved throughout every walking stride, moving the legs forward and helping control their movement as your feet return to the ground. The amount and speed of that movement changes when you walk faster, start climbing, or move onto different terrain. A hip exoskeleton provides powered assistance around this joint as you move.

This is how the New Hypershell X Series works. Two motors positioned at the hips provide assistance while HyperIntuition responds to changes in stride and terrain in real time. During TÜV Rheinland testing under controlled conditions, the system recorded up to 97.5% human-machine gait synchronization and a response time as low as 0.31 seconds.

The amount of assistance available depends on the model. The X Pro S has an 800 W peak output and 18 N·m of motor torque. X Max S and X Ultra S increase this to 1,000 W and 22 N·m. All three cover activities from everyday walking to outdoor use, with assistance adjusting as the activity and movement change.

X Pro S and X Max S each have 10 adaptive assistive modes. X Ultra S expands this to 12 with Dune and Snow modes for a wider mix of terrain. The series can also assist during downhill movement, using the hip motors to support the controlled motion involved in descending.

For someone choosing a hip exoskeleton, this keeps the powered system concentrated around the hips while still covering a wide range of activities. The New Hypershell X Series weighs around 2.5 kg depending on the model, with a removable 72 Wh battery system that makes it suitable for taking outdoors or travelling.

What Changes When You Add Powered Knees?

Adding knee motors means powered assistance is available at the knees too. Hypershell Halo has two motors at the hips and two at the knees, so both areas can receive support while you move.

Adding knee motors means powered assistance is available at the knees too.

Your knees are involved in everything from walking and climbing stairs to getting up from a chair. Their role is easy to feel on a descent. As you step downhill, the knee bends and the quadriceps help control how quickly your body lowers. Steeper ground can ask for more knee bend as you make your way down the slope.

With a motor at the knee, assistance is available directly around the joint as it bends and straightens. That can affect how the knee works depending on the activity. Climbing stairs involves repeatedly straightening the knee to move upward, while cycling keeps it bending and straightening through every pedal stroke.

Adding knee motors also means the exoskeleton covers more of the leg. The hips and knees already work closely together when you walk, climb, cycle, or head downhill. With motors at both joints, Halo can support movement across more of the legs.

Why Hypershell Halo Uses Four Motors

Hypershell Halo has two motors at the hips and another two at the knees, with HyperIntuition 2.0 coordinating assistance across the lower body. More than 30 sensors continuously collect information about movement, while HyperCore Pro processes this data up to 2,500 times per second. HyperIntuition 2.0 can anticipate movement intent approximately 0.2 seconds in advance and adjust the assistance delivered through the four motors.

For example, a hike can take you from a climb straight into a descent, changing the movement at both joints. During cycling, the hips and knees work together through each pedal stroke. Halo uses the information gathered by its sensors to adjust its assistance as these movements change.

The four-motor HyperDrive Pro system provides up to 1,490 W of peak output. Halo also uses a 72 Wh PocketVolt battery with a stated range of up to 20 km, depending on operating conditions.

Which Hypershell Exoskeleton Fits What You Want to Do?

The New Hypershell X Series and Halo give you different options depending on how much of the leg you want powered. The X Series has motors at the hips, with three models to choose from depending on the power, range, and terrain modes you need.

Halo adds motors at the knees too, so the system works across both joints. This gives you more coverage across the legs for activities where the hips and knees are both doing a lot of the work.

When choosing between them, consider the activities you spend the most time doing and the kind of terrain you usually cover. From there, you can decide whether you want the power focused at the hips or spread across the hips and knees.
